Written By Thomas Williams

Big Block, mega wins, sounds very straightforward, but can Big Blox deliver? Big Blox by Yggdrasil was launched in the summer of 2016, at a time when its competitors introduced a bunch of memorable slot titles, like Secrets of the Atlantis (NetEnt) and Karaoke Party (Microgaming) among others. It had a lot of competition, and we can say, in a way, the competition did a better job. This Big Blox slot review will examine the reason behind its success, or failure, depending on your perspective. Let's say that it’s not up to par with our expectations.

Big Blox RTP, Slot Details & Wager Limits

Big Blox has an RTP of 96.2%, which puts it in the same category with other average RTP online slots. Most players will never feel the difference of the RTP, mainly because most switch to a different slot game. As a comparison, progressive slots have RTP lower than 95%, and high variance slots average around 98%.

The game is out of the ordinary, but only because it’s a 243 ways to win slot. There are no conventional paylines like most other slot machines do. To win, all you need is a symbol in 3 consecutive rows, starting from the leftmost. Moreover, its key bonus mechanic, which hints at the slot name, is the leading cause why traditional paylines are obsolete.

As far as the wagering limits go, the entry bet level is £/€0.25, and the “Max Bet” button will set the bet amount to £/€100. The bet limits are perfectly acceptable for any player group.

Before we wrap up the details talk, we should point out the Autoplay feature, which is rather simple and does NOT offer any triggers that would otherwise stop Auto Spins, in the event of a Big Win, Mega Win and so on.

Big Blox Slot Variance – Strong Medium

We just wanted to make the low variance clear. At first glance, it makes the impression that it’s a low variance slot, due to the Big Blocks. However, after 100 spins, that’s not the case. There were times when we were without a win for up to 6 spins. And even when we landed a winning line, it wasn’t enough to breakeven. With a bit of luck, the game comes off as low variance slot, but, with a bit of luck. In reality, it should be with a bit of luck to come on top and make a profit. This is why we put the Big Blox game in the same category with medium variance slots.

Tribal Audio with Hypnotizing Graphics

From a video perspective, the Big Blox slot machine it a marvel. From a distance, it doesn’t look cutting edge, but if you take a closer look, the level of graphic detail is outstanding. We have one remark regarding the symbols though. Sure, they are unique, and they look excellent, but sometimes, because they are so detailed, it's confusing to distinguish all of them. Even when the Big Block shows up, it's not clear if it’s the high paying symbol, the medium ones, or some of the low paying symbols.

Animations and transitions are smooth; it's what anyone would expect from a slot released in 2016. We really like how the Big Blocks show up on the screen!

The Big Blox slot tribal audio fits the overall theme, but it sounds repetitive over time. There is a slight segment that raises the tension when a Big Block is formed. Attention to the detail is vital, and should there've been unique sounds for every symbol, that would've made the slot ten times more appealing. Sadly, audio is not a core criterion for many players, since the majority enjoys online slots machines with the sound muted.

Regardless of your personal preferences, the Big Blox Wild symbol is what you want to see most of the screen. Unlike the regular symbols, this one is easily identifiable. It's big, it's golden, and it says Wild! Here's a summary of the symbol value for 5 of a kind:

  • Red (Highest Paying) – 400
  • Purple (Medium-High) – 250
  • Yellow (Medium-Low ) – 200
  • Blue (Low) – 150

The other, smaller symbols for a 5 of a kind pay between 40 and 70, with 10 increment increases.

Big Blox Mobile

It is one of the few mobile slots with two mobile-friendly modes. That being said, you can play Big Blox mobile slot both in landscape and portrait mode. Regardless of how you prefer to hold your phone, Big Blox is available! Note, both layouts worked perfectly fine for us! It’s safe to say that Yggdrasil takes mobile compatibility seriously. And they should! Other casino game producers should follow in their footsteps. However, we noticed that it takes slightly longer to load the Big Blox game on mobile. If you are having poor internet access, not WiFi, have some patience, it’s worth it!

Big Blox Bonus Feature and Win Booster

Both on the inside and outside, the Big Blox slot machine by Yggdrasil doesn't seem like a game that keeps you on your toes. Even after 20 mins of play, there wasn't a moment when we were particularly happy playing. The worst part of the experience is when the Big Block is formed on reels 3, 4 and 5, and it doesn’t connect with any symbols on reel 1 and 2. It’s so disappointing. Instead of each spin being a reason, an opportunity to get excited, it’s just another disappointment.

There are no Big Blox free spins; there are no Big Blox bonus games, no Scatter symbol, or any other advanced slot mechanic that increases your chances of winning. It’s just the Big Block Feature. Speaking of which, let’s dive into the details!

Big Block Feature

What is considered a Big Block in the Big Blox slot? Of course, a regular symbol, or a regular block is 1x1. It fits one row and one column. In other words, you can have 3 regular symbols on a reel, and 5 of them in a row. Any other symbol, that’s bigger than the regular one is considered a Big Block. You can easily spot them, because the audio changes, announcing them, and there’s also an animation that makes the Big Block stand out.

Blocks range in size, anywhere between 2x2 to 5x3. In simple terms, you can have the full reels covered with a Big Block. So, to summarize:

  • 1x1 – Regular Block
  • 2x2 – Big Block (medium)
  • 3x3 – Big Block
  • 5x3 – Biggest Possible Block

When a Big Block is part of a winning line, the bits of the Block are considered as regular symbols, and there are no multipliers or boosts of any kind. We believe that there is room for improvement in this area specifically. It would've been great if the Big Blocks came with a multiplier. Even better, if each symbol came with a different multiplier.

Another cool improvement would be a re-spin after a Big Block winning line!

In our opinion, the best alternative to Big Blox (Yggdrasil) is Monkey King (Yggdrasil).

Big Blox Brings Super Mega Big Wins!

All things considered, it's a beautiful casino game library decoration. There will never be a thing like a Big Blox casino player community. It doesn't have the qualities nor the potential to become a staple or to show up on casino promotion pages. Needless to say, the slot title fits the core bonus feature, it's all about the blocks. We tried to make it clear in our Big Blox slot review, and it's pretty evident at this point. Our recommendation, you can take it for a test spin. A Big Blox slot demo version should do the trick but think twice before you spin the reels with real money!

What is the Big Blox slot RTP? chevron-down-icon
Big Blox by Yggdrasil has an RTP of 96.02%. This put Big Blox in the most competitive range of video slots, and the most common ones. Being so close to the industry average, never allowed it to become famous. On another note, the Big Blox game is considered a medium variance slot.
Are there any Big Blox free spins online? chevron-down-icon
Unlike the majority of NetEnt slots, Yggdrasil slots, including Big Blox, are not that popular when it comes to online casino promotions. Finding Big Blox free spins online is virtually impossible. If you are looking for slot free spins, you should consider NetEnt slot games.
What is unique about the Big Blox slot machine? chevron-down-icon
Big Blox comes with one distinctive feature called Big Block. There is a chance several symbols to create a Big Block. There are no Big Blox free spins and don’t hope for any bonus games that you can trigger in the base game. The only winnings boost is the Big Block feature.
