Whoever knew a wheel could bring about so much fun and excitement? Roulette is one of the true classics and dates back to the 17th century. Its rules may be simple and the general layout is pretty basic too but it is still one of the most popular games both online and in land-based establishments.

Over the years, the Roulette wheel has evolved giving us several versions of Roulette, one of which is the European Roulette. Don’t get sidetracked by its name, there aren’t any major differences. However, in the long run, even minor deviations can affect the overall RTP. Read on to find out what sets this variation apart but first, we’ll start you off with the best online casinos to head to.

With new casino sites being launched each day, it is important that you stick to the good ones. The list above gives you some of the most reliable online casinos out there. All of them boast games from well-known providers that use state-of-the-art RNG software to ensure all gameplay is fair. Furthermore, the casino games are subject to regular audits by third-party organisations like eCogra. This is important to point out at this stage as a lot of online casino players assume that this only applies for slots. Not only are they safe, the casinos listed above are also great places to pick up bonuses.

Whether you are a new player looking for a welcome bonus on your first deposit or an existing player, they have got you covered. As always most of these bonuses come with wagering requirements that must be met prior to withdrawal. Moreover, roulette games often tend to be subject to game weighting and usually have a lower percentage contribution than other casino games like slots. For instance at Rizk Casino taking a spin on a European Roulette game will only contribute to 10% of wagering requirements. Other casino sites such as LeoVegas omit this game completely from bonuses.

European Roulette may not be the best game for bonus seekers but it is definitely one for the thrill seekers. Keep reading to find out what makes this game so popular.

European Roulette Wheel

If you know anything about European roulette then you are bound to know that it all begins with a wheel. In most cases, a reliable casino will stick to a top quality brand like Cammegh. But what makes this type of roulette wheel layout so special? Well for starters it is considered as the first type of roulette wheel. In fact, all roulette wheels are based on this one. Although it originates in France, French roulette was brought to the scene later on down the road and to this day is considered a whole different variation. european-roulette-wheel

Compared to American wheels, the European wheel has 37 pockets and only one zero pocket. In fact, it is sometimes referred to as single zero roulette. The absence of a double zero pocket is primarily what makes this type of roulette more favourable to players. In general numbers on roulette wheels are spread out so as to alternate between black and red pockets and even and odd numbers. Moreover, the wheel aims to create a balance between high (19 - 36) and low numbers (1 - 18). Whilst the addition of an extra pocket in American wheels makes it hard to create a perfect equilibrium, things are much more even in this version. It is courtesy of this balance that European Roulette has a more favourable return to players than the American version. If you want to check out the different wheels for yourself we suggest heading to William Hill.

European Roulette Table - What Makes It Unique?

At first glance, a European table is almost identical to an American one. In fact, the most evident difference in the roulette table layout is the absence of a double-zero. A French Roulette table is the easiest to spot due to the inclusion of French bet names such as Passe and Manque. Furthermore, when placing dozen bets, they make use of the terms Premier, Moyenne and Dernier Douzaine.

In general, the table layout for this type of roulette is divided into two sections. Inside bets are placed on the upper section and refer to the actual numbered betting boxes. Outside bets are the boxes below and refer to specific areas such as Red, Black, Odd, Even and Dozen bets. We take a look at what these terms all mean as well as how to call bets in the section below.

European Roulette Rules

You may know what it looks like, but now we show you how to play. First things first, the rules of the game are quite simple and often enough when players refer to roulette they are actually playing the European version. In fact, this is the easiest variation to play. In basic terms, players gather around a roulette table and are invited to place their wager. These are made by placing casino chips on different betting boxes on the roulette table. The roulette wheel is then initiated and as the ball spins around the wheel, the croupier will call out 'No more bets'. A player wins when the roulette ball lands in a space that matches the betting box the casino chip was placed in. Although there aren’t any major differences in this area, we’re still going to give you a breakdown of the various betting types you can place on a European Roulette wheel.

Inside Bets

  • Straight bet - single number bet
  • Split bet - placed on the line between two numbers
  • Street bet - all three numbers in a row, chip placed at the end of the row
  • Corner bet - group of 4 numbers, chip placed in the middle point of the numbers
  • Six Line bet - two rows, chip placed at the end of the rows

Outside Bets

  • Column bet - entire column
  • Dozen bet- box of 12 numbers
  • Colour bet-  red or black
  • Odd/ Even- all odd numbers or all even numbers
  • Low/ High - all low numbers or all high numbers

As well as the above betting options, some UK casinos will also let you place split dozen and split column bets. These refer to a group of 24 numbers which means that the chances of winning are relatively high. In addition to this, the European version is also subject to special bets. Firstly players at a European wheel are able to make call bets directly to the dealer instead of by means of casino chips. These are known as announced bets and an example of this is a 'neighbours bet'. Courtesy of these types of bets, online roulette often includes a feature known as a roulette racetrack.

En Prison Rule

Although rare, this is a rule we need to point out. En Prison is similar to the La Partage in the French Roulette. Whenever a player loses due to the ball landing on the single zero, that bet is “enprisoned” for the duration of one spin. If the player wins on the next spin, the previous losing bet is paid back in full. On the other hand, if the player loses again, the house wins the lost bet amount. When this rule is applied, the house advantage is narrowed down even further. european-roulette-table-vs-american-roulette-table

European Roulette House Edge & Strategy

Although the bet types are similar to the American version of the game, the chances of winning are where things start to get interesting. In fact, in spite of European roulette payouts being the same, this variation has a house edge of 2.70% which seriously increases the chances of landing a win. This is what makes the European version so popular and we make it all clearer in the table below.

Bet Payout Chance of Winning
Straight 35:1 2.70%
Split 17:1 5.41%
Street 11:1 8.11%
Square 8:1 10.81%
Six Line 5:1 16.20%
Dozen/ Column 2:1 32.40%
Odd/Even – Red/Black – High/Low 1:1 48.64%
Ball Lands on Zero House Wins 2.70%

If you take a look at the payout table we drew up in our American or so-called Double-Zero Roulette page, you'll immediately notice the difference. In fact, in this type of roulette, players are more likely to place bets on bets with higher stakes like inside bets due to more favourable roulette odds. Of course, this is still a form of gambling and a lot of it will come down to straight-up luck. Roulette strategies, however, like Martingale and Labouchere could be helpful if you are looking for a bet management system.

European Roulette Payouts Example

This can all be calculated quite simply. Firstly, you'll need to work out the outcome probability and this is always done by taking the numbers you'll be placing bets on, divided by the total numbers. The fact that the lower figure is always 37 on European roulette is the reason for more favourable roulette odds. Success percentage is then calculated by taking a percentage of the outcome probability and this is what gives you the chances of winning.

To make sure you have understood this, let's take a look at a practical example. For a straight bet where bets are placed on a single number, this would be worked out as per the below:

  • Success percentage = (1/37)*100 = 2.70%

If you want to take things further and calculate your expected return, we have provided the equation below:

  • Expected Return = Bet * (Success % - (1 - Success %))

Play Free European Roulette Online

As mentioned previously, although European Roulette has more favourable odds than the American version, it is still a form of gambling just like blackjack. In fact, in order to make a roulette bet, you'll need to wager real money and most roulette tables have limits you must meet too. As always we are true believers in responsible gambling and would always recommend that you keep your personal bankroll separate from your betting funds. Luckily if you do not have any cash to spare, a lot of online casinos will still allow you to play free casino games including roulette. Rizk, for instance, has free roulette games and this is a great opportunity for players to familiarise themselves with roulette rules for the different variations.

European Roulette is, of course, a great game if you are looking for big wins. Unfortunately though, since it is a game of luck you can also lose everything very quickly too. For this reason, playing roulette games for free online is a good alternative for players who want to eliminate all risks.
