Craps - Craps Guide

Origins of Craps

Some forms of craps appear for the first during the Crusades, but at that time craps pretty much had no clear cut rules. Over the course of its history craps as any other game evolved and changed. Most of the applied changes were set in place to instate fair gaming. At later stages the game was mainly influenced by the French and in the past century or so mostly by players coming from the US.

At first glance the table may resemble to a Roulette table, however, there’s no roulette wheel and the wagers are rather different. Some smaller casinos don’t have a craps table at all due to the requirement of 4 employees who have to attend the table. Because of this at some casinos you can find mini-craps, where only 2 casino employees attend the table.

What is Craps?

On a fundamental level it’s a dice game. It can be played versus another player or against a bank i.e. a casino. Since craps requires some equipment if you want to play versus some of your friends you’ll be playing street-craps. However, the most common form of craps is still the one you get to play at some of the online or land casinos. Furthermore, in order to avoid certain regulations some casinos have switched from a pair of dices to two decks of cards, a red and a blue one, containing numbers from 1 to 6. The rules remain the same with only the dices being replaced with cards.

How to Play Craps

One player is the shooter, you can be one, but it’s not necessary. However, the shooter is required to place a bet on the Pass or the Don’t Pass Line. In simple terms these bets can be explained as Win or Don’t Win bets. The shooter is given 5 dices of which he/she should choose two, the rest are returned. The dices are thrown on the table, depending on the outcome the bet can be a winning or a losing one.

There are two types of outcomes or rolls, a come-out roll and a point. The shooter is required to make one or more come-out rolls. A come-out roll of 2, 3 or 12 is called crapping out or short craps. All pass bets are losing one. An outcome of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 is called a point. If the shooter rolls a point he/she is required to roll again until a 7 is rolled. Come-out rolls of 7 and 11 are also called natural.

If the Pass bets win, Don’t Pass bets lose, with one exception. Rolling a 12 makes all Pass bets lose and all Don’t Pass bets are barred and returned to players.

Types of Bets

Craps just as any other game offers few ways of playing the game by giving players the opportunity to place different bets.

Come and Don’t Come Bets

Players can place this type of bets only after there’s a Point, in other words you can place a Come or a Don’t Come bet before the Come-Out Roll.

Placing one of these bets completely changes the winning conditions. For example, placing a Come Bet makes the number you’ve chosen the Come-Bet number. Rolling a 7 won’t bring you a win, instead the number you’ve chosen will. The same rule applies to an 11.

On the other hand a Don’t Come bet will be returned if the outcome is 7 or 11. If a 2 or 3 is rolled in the first round the Don’t Come bet wins.

Single Roll Bets

If you’re a beginner we recommend you placing this type of bets. They are simple to understand. Here’s a full list of Single Roll Bets. Rolling the number you’ve chosen brings you a win.

·       2 – Snake Eyes/ Aces. Wins if 2 is rolled.

·       3 – Ace-Deuce. Wins if 3 is rolled.

·       Yo - Wins if 11 is rolled.

·       12- Boxcars/ Cornrows/ Midnight. Wins if 12 is rolled.

·       2 or 12- Hi-Lo. Wins if 2 or 12 is rolled.

·       Any Craps - Three Way. Wins if 2, 3 or 12 is rolled.

·       C & E. – Wins if craps or 11 is rolled.

·       Any Seven – Wins if 7 is rolled.

·       The Horn – Wins if 2, 3, 11 or 12 is rolled.

·       Hard and Horny – Wins if the Horn is rolled or a Hard Way.

·       WhirlWhorld. Wins if Horny or 7 is rolled.

·       On the Top- Wins if you guess the numbers on the dices that will be rolled, separately.

·       Field – Wins if the number selected of 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 is rolled.

Multi Roll Bets

·       Hard Way- Wins if 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5 or 2x6 is rolled.

·       Easy Way- Opposite of Hard Way. There mustn’t be two identical dices.

·       Big 6 and Big 8 - Wins if 6 or 8 is rolled before a 7.

·       Place and buy – Wins if selected number is rolled. Players can place custom bets.

·       Lay- Opposite of Place and buy. Players can place custom bets.

How to Profit From Craps

Craps is fairly similar to roulette. It is a game of chance and you can’t devise a clear cut strategy that will let you win always. However, there are ways to maximize your odds of winning. In the long run the house edge will eat away your budget.

Always Bet on the Outside Bets

To put it in simple words, this will allow you to play more and enjoy more in the game. On top of this placing a Don’t Come or a Don’t Pass bet can be rather interesting with all other players betting the opposite. If you don’t want to be the “black sheep” it’s perfectly OK to place a Come or Pass bet.

We don’t want to confuse you any further as it takes some time to digest all this information. The only thing you should remember is to always place outside bets. Placing some of the Single Roll Bets may be exciting, but this also comes with a big risk.

Casino games are tailored this way so your body starts pumping adrenaline sooner. Think with a cool head and don’t listen to what other players are telling you. You are responsible for your bet and you are the only one that takes your winnings home.
