After enacting the International Business Corporations Act in the year 1982 it became an appealing destination for off-shore banking. With the developing of the internet technology Antigua and Barbuda started attracting interest for online gambling casinos.
It is one of the pioneers in that region to start licensing and controlling the gambling operators. Ever since 1994 the jurisdiction became was well established with clear rules and regulations, it has attracted a number of online casinos.
A point that must be stressed is that online casinos that are licensed under this jurisdiction can provide their services to the citizens of the UK, because of the identical law system and the reputation the regulator has maintained over the years.

Licenses

The regulator of gambling activities in Antigua and Barbuda is called Directorate of Offshore Gaming. It is a part of a much bigger organization in the country called Financial Services Regulatory Commission.
Because Antigua and Barbuda has enacted the International Business Corporations Act the authorities have to be governed by its guidelines and framework. Meaning, the licensees are regularly audited to ensure player protection and reliability of the casino operator.
The Directorate offers 2 types of licenses to the willing applicants:

  • Interactive wagering license
  • Interactive gaming license

The 2 types are enough for cover all gambling and betting activities and all operators fall in those two categories. It is a simple and well constructed system that has proven to be adequate for the needs of the operators and for their players.

International influence

Being one of the leader in the industry Antigua and Barbuda has felt the best and the worst.
An example for the positive effect that it has had is the cooperation with the authorities of Kahnawake and the Gambling Commission. All casinos that are licensed in one of these two jurisdictions can operate interchangeably, in other words if a casino is licensed under the Kahnawake jurisdiction it can operate in Antigua and Barbuda legally as well.
As we said international presence can bring its hardships. The Antigua and Barbuda representatives have filed a complaint to the World Trade Organization because of interfering and putting to an end the services of the casinos that are under Antiguan and Barbuda license. However, to this day no resolution has been made.
